Hire a Professional Emcee and Watch Your Event Come Alive with Purpose

I spend a decent chunk of my time educating clients about the benefits of investing in a professional emcee for their event. Before we get too far into the conversation, I ask them what the role of emcee entails and this is where it starts to become clear that most people don’t have a solid understanding of what exactly a professional emcee does or more importantly should do. When we don’t understand the value of an emcee it makes it difficult to justify investing in a professional emcee for an event. I understand this and so I love helping clients move along the continuum of understanding when it comes to this investment.

Most people agree that the emcee needs to possess excellent stage presence and unparalleled comfort with speaking in front of a crowd. However, there is so much more to the story and sadly most clients do not discover the, more to the story part, until after they have agreed to let a member of the organization or someone else who is less than qualified take on the role of emcee. Typically, this is someone who has a gregarious personality and maybe even loves karaoke (True story. A board chair once convinced the event planner that they would be a great and no cost fit as an emcee because they love to karaoke and that proves they are comfortable on stage and with a microphone). What this board chair failed to mention was that they also loved whiskey and the more nervous they became the more whiskey they drank to calm their nerves. The end of this story is about as catastrophic as you think it is.

When I think of an emcee, I think of the role of the orchestra conductor during a Broadway musical. The storyline is the timeline, the performers are the speakers and entertainment, and the music is the glue that holds it all together and keeps everything flowing from one scene to the next. We feel it when it’s working and boy oh boy do we feel it when things don’t work. If a musician misses their cue to start to play or worse, stop, it creates chaos for the rest of the musicians and ultimately the audience. The conductor sets the stage as they signal the start of the musical, they keep the music flowing by cueing all the musicians and they signal the end. And so it is with a professional emcee. Like a conductor, the emcee effortlessly weaves together the event and guides the audience along a moving experience, smoothing out any missed cues and bumps in the road.
